A Message from Sister Benita

The Benedictine Tradition LIVES . . . what profundity is packed into those four words! For 1500 years, the Rule of St. Benedict, the precepts written by the Italian monk for those wishing to serve God through monastic living, has endured. But it has more than endured; it has flourished. Since the founding of St. Benedict's first monastery in 529
in Monte Cassino, empires have risen and fallen, cultures have come and gone, and philosophies have soared to prominence and fallen into obscurity — yet Benedict's vision lives!

Following in his footsteps, the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh have lived the Benedictine Tradition for more than 140 years through our charism of seeking God in community, prayer, and ministry.

But what does it mean to live? Living things possess certain characteristics. Among them are order, a need for sustenance, and the ability to bear fruit. Within the Order of St. Benedict, we come together as unique individuals to form a monastic community that is sustained by our faith and our prayer. The fruit of our monastic life abounds in our many ministries.

A final characteristic is that all living things must adapt and grow. Since 1926, our present location on Perrysville Avenue has been the center of our monastic community. After much discernment, the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh have decided that for our community to thrive, we must build a new monastery — one that will be the home of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh and also the place from which our collaborative ministries flow.

I am very excited to share with you this artist’s rendering of our new monastery. How long we have dreamed, worked, and prayed for this new monastery and now our dream is coming true!  You are a great part of that dream becoming a reality.  “When we dream alone, it is only a dream, when we dream together, reality begins.”  Brazilian proverb

Sincerely in Christ,

Sister Benita DeMatteis, OSB
Prioress
