Sister Estelle Svezeny
I have been a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh for many years. I was attracted to this Community by the Divine Office, habit and discipline at that time.
My early ministry was teaching, but I did not feel that I was meant to be a teacher, and after a few years I was permitted to live at the Monastery and work within it. I served as Portress, helped in the laundry, kitchen, and served wherever needed.
I am a conservative person by nature and was happier before the changes of Vatican II. At this time I find it especially kind of the Community to allow me to pray the Divine Office privately, as that seems to fit my needs best.
I find great joy in doing deeds that help others; feeding the sick Sisters on the Healthcare floor, and folding the daily laundry.
I like to be kept busy because one of my favorite sayings is, “Idleness is the enemy of the soul.”
Another favorite simple prayer I’ve learned is, “Lord, take me where you want me to go. Tell me what you want me to say. Let me meet whomever you want me to meet. And Lord, make me keep out of Your way.”
I find my times of private prayer most fulfilling as I age within the community. |
