Corporate Commitment Statement "We, the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, commit ourselves as a faith-filled community to be supportive of women who are struggling for dignity and justice in their lives; especially those who are most oppressed." Rule of Benedict To witness and work for PEACE has long been acknowledged as a legacy from St. Benedict. For monastic women this is accomplished through incarnating the values of Benedict's Rule. The Rule of St. Benedict is a spiritual guide that has been in use since the sixth century. It was written by a man who sought to lead his life according to the Scriptures. Benedict wrote his Rule so that anyone – woman or man, professional or unskilled, married or single – could live according to his guidelines. His objective was to enable anyone at all to "listen with the ear of their heart" and to ultimately "prefer nothing to Christ". Benedict’s Rule urges one to live a Christ-centered existence. He urges one to live lives that pray, play, work, learn, and love. Benedict urges persons to balance their life. To realize that to be a whole individual — a true Gospel carrier – a person must know how to work, how to pray, and how to build and strengthen the bonds of love and friendship with those around them. Any one of these elements is good of their own merit, but Benedict’s idea is that the really "holy" individual will work toward a balance of all three elements in their lives. Creating this balance is a life-long challenge. It gives the follower of Benedict the motivation to daily "seek Christ" wherever one lives or works.
