Doing the extraordinary, living the ordinary “I’m looking for an angel, ‘cause angels are so few, so until the day that one comes along, I’ll tag along with you.” These are the words from a song from the first half of the 20th century that Sister Charlotte spoke when speaking about her vocation to the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh. This year, she and four other retired Sisters celebrate birthdays in their nineties. They continue to live out their commitment to God, to their Benedictine Community, and to the people they serve. Day after day they live a life of prayer and work, doing it simply and quietly, not looking for recognition. But although they live an ordinary life of humble service filled with love, it is an extraordinary commitment. Their contributions and dedication to our Benedictine Community and to the people of Pennsylvania give witness to the extraordinary, and the wisdom they share with us today is a generous blessing. The summaries of their ministries are simple records of ordinary lives. The extraordinary also lives on in the countless number of persons touched by them.
